New Year, New Tournament

As it stands, there is only one BUCS league for Women’s indoor cricket, split into regions and only catering for the best 6 players each University has to offer. Those who don’t make it into the first team are often left with little to no game time until the outdoor season comes around, when games can be rained off or clash with exams. We feel this is unfair to those members who pay the same membership fees as those who get to compete in indoor BUCS ...and that something should be done to change this.
Furthermore, many of the girls who join in with cricket at University are entirely new to the sport. In order to ensure that these women stick with the sport, more opportunities need to be created for these girls to play, improve and progress. Without regular match practice, players are unlikely to improve, widening the gap between those who play BUCS and those who don’t.
For these reasons, this year the club has set up the first ever indoor ‘development BUCS’ tournament, to be held in Sheffield on the 25th February for development squads of local Universities to come together and give more people opportunities to compete. We also hope to run workshops alongside the matches to teach people how to score, umpire and many other aspects of the game. With at least 4 teams signed up already we can’t wait to welcome everyone to Sheffield for what is bound to be a great day for women’s University Cricket.
